MacB employees provide relief efforts to Hurricane Katrina victims At the request of Congressmen Jeff Miller (FL) and Charlie Melancon (LA), MacB employees in Shalimar, Florida led a volunteer team of small hovercraft operators into New Orleans to assist in the rescue efforts after Katrina. Working with MacB’s strategic teaming partner Universal Hovercraft and others, MacB organized a team of 7 hovercrafts which were subsequently deployed to New Orleans on 3 September. The small hovercraft team demonstrated that hovercraft can get to places in urban floods where no other craft can go. They can do things quicker and cheaper than can be done by helicopters. A key advantage over other watercraft is that they can operate where there are lots of transitions from dry land to flooded land, or where there is a lot of debris or contamination in the water. The hovercraft team also demonstrated that the craft fits into military helicopters for rapid deployment. While the team arrived too late to be involved in the dramatic rescues seen in the national media, we are very proud of this volunteer effort and thankful for the efforts of Representatives Miller and Melancon to help Katrina victims in any way possible. MacB and Universal Hovercraft are continuing efforts to make small hovercraft a viable component of future Federal, State and local responses to natural disasters. We believe they can make a real difference and save lives.
